Margaret Kyakunda Mubanda is a mother, grandmother, teacher, and dedicated social worker. Born in Uganda, she taught for 13 years and served as a Deputy Headmistress before moving to Canada in 1991. Motivated by her early experiences with poverty and injustice, she’s committed to ensuring no child is left behind.
In Canada, Margaret worked for 19 years with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, passionately supporting children, youth, and families. She is especially focused on addressing the challenges faced by young people aging out of government care.
Margaret received the 2020 Women of Distinction Award for her tireless work in poverty reduction. Her deep understanding of mental health and community challenges fuels her advocacy within the Fraser Valley and beyond.
She served as the President of Daughters of Hope Resources Society, Program Director of the African Women Empowerment Society, and holds leadership roles in multiple organizations, including the Surrey Poverty Reduction Coalition and Uganda Peace and Reconciliation of BC. Through her work and volunteerism, Margaret empowers African-Canadian communities to thrive and lead.
